Using B-T-F®
B-T-F® Iodophor is a sanitizer, not a cleaner. Equipment must be cleaned and rinsed prior to sanitizing. B-T-F® Iodophor will not damage stainless steel and therefore can be used in all home brewing sanitation applications.
B-T-F® Iodophor is a no rinse sanitizer when used according to directions. You do not have to rinse the surfaces with clean potable water after sanitizing. Just drain and allow to air dry. Use ½ oz. (one tablespoon) B-T-F® in 5 gallons of cold water to achieve 12.5 ppm titratable iodine sanitizing solution. At levels over 15 ppm, iodine aroma and/or taste may become evident. There is an absolute upper limit of 25 ppm. The minimum surface contact time is 2 minutes.
There are iodine test strips available that will indicate the approximate strength of the B-T-F® Iodophor solution in parts per million (ppm). The amber color of the solution is a "built-in" indicator of the strength of the solution. As long as the solution is amber in color, it is an effective sanitizer. Prolonged contact with some plastic items may cause amber discoloration to plastic. However, this discoloration is harmless. Keep original container tightly closed when not in use. Covering the sanitizing solution will prolong its useful life. Make new solutions daily or when color fades.
