Alicante, A.K.A. Alicante Bouschet, is a robust grape with a deep red flesh that produces a dark purple wine. Originally a blending grape, it is becoming more well known as a grape used to make wines on its own. Alicante wines tend to be big and bold, with fruit forward flavors and aromas! Notes of berries, particularly blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries abound in this wine. It has spicy and somewhat sweet overtones as well, with baking spice, dark chocolate and vanilla bean interwoven with the fruit character. Body, alcohol and tannins tend to be high, but the structure of the wine can be affected by climate and regional terrior. The climate of California is perfect for making a mellow, big wine that all will love!
